Backward Classes Welfare Department, Purulia
Features of Birhor in Purulia
The Birhor is a small community, with a poor literacy rate, economically backward and still use traditional technology in their crafts. It has been learnt that most of the Birhors of Purulia migrated from Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Dhanbad of Jharkhand State more than 150 years ago and finally settled in 3 blocks of Purulia like Baghmundi, Jhalda-I and Balarampur. At present they are found living in Bareriya, and Bhupatipalli village in Baghmundi Block, Chhotobakad in Jhalda-I Block and Bersa village under Balarampur Block.
This tribal folk were previously habituated to live in the in-accessible forests and hill areas of Purulia district and preferred to live in leaf huts. But at present they are living in houses built by B.C.W. Deptt. Previously they did not send their wards to educational institutions, were not adapted to visiting hospitals or health centres to treat themselves from various critical ailments. Even the housewives did not show any interest for healthcare of their wards. But at present they are sending their wards to educational Institution and accepting Health facilities. MANT an N.G.O. is providing Mobile Health Care facilities to the Birhor. At present they are involved in various economic activities like animal husbandry Babui Rope making etc.
Due to various intervention by Govt. in the B.C.W. Deptt. it has been observed that the Birhors are slowly but steadily undergoing a certain amount of change in their general life style. With the passage of time Birhors are becoming connected with main stream society.
